What is hentai?

Hentai is a broad genre of Japanese fiction with pornographic content. The stories are told through drawings: in some cases in comic format (called manga) and in other cases in audiovisual animation (called anime).

The Japanese word hentai means perversion or transformation. In works of this genre you can find all kinds of fetishes.

The hentai includes a wide variety of sub-genres depending on its theme or the particular characteristics of the protagonists. In addition to the specific sub-genres of hentai, in many cases there are crosslinks with other great genres such as science fiction, fantasy or the police.

Hentai story
Although nudes appeared in Japanese graphic stories (manga) from the 1960s, the first animated productions that were sold as hentai, that is, as a pornographic product aimed at the adult public, appeared in the 1970s, as Cybele, from Azuma Hideo, or Cream Lemon.

Hentai as a genre first appeared as animation and then developed as graphic stories.

Hentai formats

Hentai in magazines
The manga is the Japanese cartoon in book, magazine or digital format.
The hentai comes in two formats:

Sleeve. The manga is the Japanese cartoon. It differs from the western comic in that the pages are read from left to right. It was born in book or printed magazine format, but currently also exists in digital format.
Anime. They are cartoons with stylistic characteristics similar to those of the manga, but with less detail. This is because the time the anime viewer has to observe the image is much less than the time the manga reader has.
Manga and anime are not exclusive formats of hentai, but exist in other types of works such as adventure, historical or romantic fiction.

Lack of restrictions in the hentai
One of the main characteristics of the hentai is that, because they are cartoons (animated or fixed), absolutely any situation can be represented.

This means that fantastic characters, hermaphrodites, sex organs of impossible sizes, etc. can appear. Also, in certain types of hentai penetration of the internal organs is shown, which would be impossible in pornography with real actors.

The fact that real people do not participate also allows us to represent situations of extreme violence.

Hentai controversy
hentai
Some positions maintain that the hentai promotes acts of violence.
Since part of the hentai works depict situations of psychological and physical violence, sometimes reaching rape (of adults and children) and torture, there is a critical position that this type of pornography promotes acts of violence.

Proponents of this type of hentai maintain that no person is really hurt or humiliated, as it could happen in pornography with actors and that hentai consumers can distinguish the difference between fantasy (looking at pictures of violent situations) and reality ( exerting violence on another person).

In this sense, the hentai would be analogous to sadomasochistic practices, in which violence is agreed and therefore is not the actual imposition on another person, but the expression of a fantasy.

However, hentai can get into the hands of teenagers who may be affected by the development of their sexuality due to the association of sex with violence. The negative impact of these works could depend on the receiver.

This controversy cannot yet be resolved since there are no defining studies on the effect of violence in pornography on the consumer.

Hentai legality

There is no clear definition on the legality of the hentai that presents minors in sexual situations. In the United States, there have been cases in which hentai consumption has been punished for dealing with obscene imagery.

In other cases, freedom of expression has been defended since no minor had been involved in the production of the works. This legal gap is more or less wide depending on the country.

Categories according to the sex of the protagonists

In addition to the hentai that shows heterosexual relationships, there are two specific categories for same-sex hentai:

Yaoi.

The protagonists are men who have relationships with each other. If they have androgynous characteristics it is called “bishonen”

Yuri.

The protagonists are women who have relationships with each other.
There are also both yaoi and yuri works that do not belong to the hentai, in which explicit sex is not shown but simply a love story.

The representation of the naked human body exists from the earliest forms of art. However, for it to be considered pornography (such as hentai) it must be a representation of sexual acts that aims to provoke sexual excitement in the observer.

Representations with clear pornographic objectives spread in the 15th century, with the improvement of the printing press, which allowed distributing and selling copies of engravings with explicit sexual content.

They have in common with hentai that they are fictitious representations of the sexual act. However, with the development of photography, pornography was mainly devoted to images of real situations.

Another western antecedent of hentai is erotic animations, since much of the hentai is animated. These animations began production in the United States in the 1920s and were short-lived (less than ten minutes).

Oriental hentai background
hentai – manga
Shunga is an antecedent to hentai.
In Japan, between the 17th and 19th centuries, shunga developed, a genre of drawings and engravings of sexual situations. They were marketed as picture books or as illustrations to popular literature books.

Its price was high, in part because there were usually prohibitions on its creation and marketing.

Shunga is an antecedent to hentai because they are both sexually explicit fictional representations. Like the hentai, it included impossible situations, such as the participation of monstrous, mythological, or imaginary animals.
